Two vols. An altogether rare and astonishingly fine copy of Mary Shelley's masterwork, now firmly entrenched in the canon of Western literature. This edition, issued five years after the first English and two years after the first French editions, was reprinted from the former using the same plates and done in a timely fashion to capitalize on the popularity of the theatrical "Frankensteins," the first stage adaptation of the work. Bound in contemporary paper-covered boards with leather labels to spines. Modest exterior rubs, original endpapers present but remedied by later papers overlaid, tender leaf at 71/72 of volume one, pp. 203-206 gathering of volume two loose. A near fine testament to the book's contemporaneous appeal and Shelley's immediate impact on the literary and artistic scene. Protected in custom box.
