Octavo. 37pp. With an original leaf tipped in, from the first American edition of "Several Poems" by Anne Bradstreet, printing in Boston in 1678. With an essay by George Frisbie Whicher, which provides historical context in which to study one of the first poets of the American colonies, and questions how "a mere poet, and she a women, manage[d] to gain attention in the midst of wars and religious controversies". Contains facsimiles of the title pages of the first British and American editions, and a bibliographical list. Bound in marbled boards backed with red cloth. Top page edge faintly soiled, modest overall rubbing, else near fine. A rare example from a significant midcentury American press.
