The book was most famously adapted by Elia Kazan in 1955, receiving Academy Award nominations for Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (won by Jo Van Fleet), Best Screenplay, and Best Actor (a posthumous nomination for James Dean). With the word "bite" on page 281, line 38. First issue jacket with author portrait of Steinbeck at rear panel, without credit line.
