16mo. xxxi, 94, (2), 32pp. First edition. Bleek derived the source material for these forty-two fables from the library of Sir George J. Grey, who was a colonial administrator throughout the British Empire; most relevant here is his tenure as governor of the Cape Colony from 1854 to 1861. The final group of pages comprises a robust publisher's catalogue, including works on Maori, Zulu, and other indigenous languages and cultures. Bound in green cloth over boards ornamented both in gilt and in blind. Moderate rubbing to edges, else a near fine example of education at the height of British imperialism.
