Quarto. 18 folios, all bifold save one trifold. Inspired by Elias Canetti's Nobel Prize-winning novel Auto da Fé, Szirtes and King reiterate Canetti's address of totalitarianism and censorship in a fourteen-part poetic cycle. To these King has added collaged illustrations, their mixed textures and shapes adding to the fragmented and confused atmosphere that authoritarian governments foster to shore up their own power. Each folio thus feels significant on its own terms, and when taken together as a cohesive book they create a community of texts and images that resists, both aesthetically and politically, the terrible fracture of fascism. Certainly both Canetti's original work and Szirtes and King's representation of its themes remains all too relevant, and the lives of books still deserve attention and protection. Sheets held in chemise of thick card with onlaid original collage by King. Fine. Housed in drop-back box. Prospectus laid in.
