The original artwork consists of an elaborate border representing Crusoe's island wilderness as an Edenic jungle, complete with a snake coiled on a branch. The untamed naturalism of the image was intended to nicely frame an electrotype page, as indicated by the penciled notes at the center of the sheet. Rhead worked with his brother, Frederick Alfred Rhead, on the project, which was published by Blue Ribbon Books around 1900 and featured Rhead's initials and illustrations in both black and white and color. Alongside this piece is a proof sheet for the Tenth Annual Art Auction and Dinner for the benefit of the Holy Land Conservation Fund, which recycled the image for its cover. Six copies of the second proof are also included, printed on heavy stock. Original artwork with mild toning and glancingly toned and rubbed, else near fine. Matted. Proofs likewise near fine with little evidence of interaction.
